Grand Canyon, Utah Valley Remain Unbeaten After Day Two of 2024 University Credit Union WAC Softball Tournament

SEATTLE, Wash. – After two days of play and eight total games, No. 1 Grand Canyon and No. 3 Utah Valley were the only remaining unbeaten teams in the field of the 2024 University Credit Union WAC Softball Tournament on Thursday at Logan Field.

The Wolverines downed No. 2 California Baptist 3-1, while the Lopes defeated No. 4 Seattle U 3-2 to advance in the winners’ bracket. The two teams will roll on to a Friday matchup at 1 p.m. PT for a chance to play in the championship round.

California Baptist responded with a 4-1 win to eliminate No. 8 Southern Utah and play on in the bottom half of the bracket. No. 6 UT Arlington eliminated No. 4 Seattle U 7-6 to advance to match up with No. 2 California Baptist on Friday at 4 p.m. PT in the semifinal round.

Game 5 – No. 3 Utah Valley , No. 2 California Baptist 1 | Box Score
Utah Valley kept the momentum going from last night’s walk-off win to down No. 2 California Baptist 3-1. Halle Morris, Angelique Mann and Britney Moreno finished with one RBI each, while Ry Binne led the Wolverines with three hits at the plate (3-for-3). Payge Armendariz earned the win, allowing three hits with no walks and three strikeouts on 56 pitches. Armendariz also had two hits on three at-bats with a .312 batting average. Halle Morris closed out the game surrendering none with one strikeout.  

Kalena Burns led California Baptist with two hits, one being a bunt in the bottom of the sixth that sent Priscilla Estrada across to score. Presley Hosick pitched 5.2 innings, allowing nine hits with six strikeouts on 95 pitches.

Game 6 – No. 1 Grand Canyon 3, No. 4 Seattle U 2 | Box Score
An RBI single to center field by Seattle U’s Taylor Fitch gave the Redhawks a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Grand Canyon would respond in the fourth as Makaiya Gomez drove in a pair of runs to take the lead 2-1. The Lopes would earn the insurance run at the bottom of the sixth as Ramsay Lopez ripped a hit to right field, sending Kristin Fifield through home plate. WAC Player of the Year Hailey Hudson spun a complete game, allowing seven hits, one walk with five strikeouts on 107 pitches.

At the top of the seventh, Seattle U nearly made a comeback as a Mikee Morris single to right field led Tai Wilson to score and bring the game within one. Hudson struck out Lily Garcia to end the game 3-2. Jasmine Wehn and Wilson led the Redhawks with two hits apiece.

Game 7 – No. 2 California Baptist 4, No. 8 Southern Utah 1 | Box Score
California Baptist raced out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first against Southern Utah as Merissa Borkowski drove in two runs and a Maya Martinez RBI single up the middle led to three. A Priscilla Estrada RBI triple to right field at the top of the sixth provided the winning CBU run. Sydney Soto led the Lancers with three hits on three at-bats.
 
Southern Utah would earn its lone run at the bottom of the second as an Alayah Toscano single down left field sent Kassidy Munoz across the plate.
 
Game 8 – No. 6 UT Arlington 7, No. 4 Seattle U 6 | Box Score
The last game of the night saw a back-and-forth scoring battle between No. 4 Seattle U and No. 6 UT Arlington as the Mavs pulled off a 7-6 upset win to eliminate the Redhawks. UT Arlington tallied five RBIs on five hits and retired the tying Seattle U run at the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning.
 
Jessica Adams drove in two runs as she was one of two Mavericks to have two RBIs. Mikee Morris tallied three base hits for Seattle U, while Jasmine Wehn and Tai Wilson had two hits apiece.
