Grand Canyon, California Baptist to Meet on Saturday for the 2024 University Credit Union WAC Softball Championship

SEATTLE, Wash. – Grand Canyon remained the only unbeaten team after day three of the 2024 University Credit Union WAC Softball Tournament on Friday at Logan Field to advance to the championship final. No. 1 Grand Canyon defeated No. 3 Utah Valley 4-1, then No. 2 California Baptist outlasted the Wolverines 5-4 to advance to its first ever WAC Championship game appearance.

Grand Canyon and California Baptist will collide in game 12 of the tournament at 1 p.m. PT on Saturday on ESPN+. If CBU were to force the ‘if necessary’ 13th and final game, it would take place at approximately 4 p.m. PT.

Game 9 – No. 1 Grand Canyon 4, No. 3 Utah Valley 0 | Box Score
Grand Canyon advanced to its third consecutive WAC Championship game appearance as the Lopes cruised to a 4-0 shutout of Utah Valley. Kristin Fifield’s home run to right center field ignited the Grand Canyon’s offense in the top of the fourth inning for a 1-0 lead. The Lopes would then score three more runs in the same inning. Ashley Trierweiler turned in a 3-for-4 day for Grand Canyon, logging a double to left center at the top of the first. Meghan Golden shined in a two-hit shutout, walking one with five strikeouts on 99 pitches.

Game 10 – No. 2 California Baptist 4, No. 6 UT Arlington 1 | Box Score
A Priscilla Estrada triple to center field led Merissa Borkowski across home plate to get California Baptist on the board 1-0 at the top of the first. UT Arlington would respond at the bottom first as Morgan Westbrook would drive in a run to tie the game.

Kate Penberthy bombed a two-run homer to left field to put the Lancers up 3-1 at the top of the fourth. The Lancers would earn their final run at the top of the fifth on an error to eliminate the Mavs 4-1.
Westbrook led UTA with two base hits, while Kaylee Cavazos, Nicole Hill and Valerie Ornelas had one apiece.

Game 11 – No. 2 California Baptist 5, No. 3 Utah Valley 4 | Box Score
California Baptist outlasted Utah Valley 5-4 to advance to its first ever WAC championship game appearance. The Lancers got hot early as Maya Martinez blasted a grand slam to right center field at the bottom of the first for an early 4-0 lead.
 
A Peyton Hall single through the right side sent Megan Gibbs across home plate for Utah Valley at the top of the second. The Wolverines caught wind at the top of the fifth as Ry Binne reached first base on a throwing error sending Hall to score. A Libbie Hawker RBI single to center field and a Britney Moreno sac fly tied the game at 4-4 for Utah Valley.
 
Maya Avila drove in the winning run for California Baptist with a single to right center field at the bottom of the sixth. Jasmine Castenada earned the win for the Lancers, surrendering none on one hit in the last two innings on 29 pitches.
