2024 WAC Baseball Release - Week 14

GCU LOCKS UP TOP TOURNAMENT SEED
Another WAC series win for Grand Canyon last weekend officially clinched the Lopes the top seed in the 2024 University Credit Union WAC Baseball Tournament in Mesa, Arizona next week. GCU took two of three games from Abilene Christian to push its league record out of reach at 21-6 (.778) with one conference weekend remaining. The Lopes also entered the 2023 WAC Tournament as the number one seed before losing two straight games to be bounced out of the event.

THE FIELD FOR MESA IS SET!
The 2024 University Credit Union WAC Baseball Tournament on May 21-25 at Hohokam Stadium in Mesa, Arizona, has its eight-team field decided. Grand Canyon, Utah Valley, California Baptist, Abilene Christian, Tarleton State, UT Arlington, UTRGV and Sacramento State have each punched its ticket to the tournament, with final seeding to be decided at the conclusion of games on May 18. The top two seeds in the tournament will earn a double-bye to the quarterfinals of double-elimination play on May 23, while seeds three and four will be safely through to the first round on May 22. Seeds 5-8 will compete in a pair of knockout games on May 21 to play into the main draw.

GOULDSMITH HELPS SAC STATE LOCK UP A SPOT
Sacramento State senior infielder Gunner Gouldsmith claimed WAC Player of the Week on May 13 after batting .556 with 10 RBIs, four runs and a 1.056 slugging percentage for the Hornets over four games last week. Gouldsmith drove in four runs in midweek play on May 7 and added a 5-for-5 game against Stephen F. Austin on May 11.

UVU CROSSES THE CENTURY HOME RUN MARK
Through 52 games thus far this season, Utah Valley has clubbed a team total of 100 home runs to lead all WAC offenses. The Wolverines have hit three or more big flies in a game on 16 different occasions thus far in 2024 and are the first WAC lineup with 100 or more team home runs in a campaign since 2010. Utah Valley checked in 14th in NCAA Division I in home runs as of May 14.

LOOKING AHEAD TO MESA
Of the eight teams qualified for the 2024 University Credit Union WAC Baseball Tournament, only three have previously hoisted the championship trophy. Sacramento State won the WAC title in 2014, 2017 and 2019, with a Utah Valley win in the middle of that run in 2016. Grand Canyon captured the tournament victory in 2021 in Mesa.
