MESA, Ariz. – Fireworks continued on the second day of the 2024 University Credit Union WAC Baseball Tournament on Wednesday at Hohokam Stadium. No. 3 Utah Valley picked up a 12-6 win against No. 7 UTRGV in its 2024 tournament debut and No. 5 Tarleton State earned its second straight win of the week, upsetting No. 4 California Baptist 5-3 to reach the winner’s bracket of the WAC quarterfinal round for the first time.
The 2024 University Credit Union WAC Baseball Tournament resumes with four games, including two knockout contests on Thursday. No. 3 Utah Valley and No. 2 Abilene Christian get things going at 9 a.m. MST, with No. 5 Tarleton State and No. 1 Grand Canyon to follow at approximately noon MST.
The non-advancing team in the UVU-ACU matchup will take on No. 4 CBU in an elimination game Thursday at 4 p.m. MST, with the non-advancing squad in the Tarleton State-GCU clash meeting UTRGV in a knockout game at 7 p.m. MST. All games will air on ESPN+.
Game 3 – No. 3 Utah Valley 12, No. 7 UTRGV 6
No. 3 Utah Valley erased a slow start to move into the quarterfinal winner’s bracket powered by a six-run bottom of the third and four-run bottom of the eighth frame against No. 7 UTRGV. The Wolverines logged 11 hits and drew seven walks in the win.
Nate Bach posted a big day with two hits and six RBIs for Utah Valley, and
Calyn Halvorson added two RBIs and two runs scored.
Mitch Mueller went 6.1 innings of relief, allowing five hits and striking out six UTRGV hitters to improve to 6-1 on the season.
Kade York registered two base hits and scored three times for UTRGV, and
Easton Moomau added two hits and two runs for the Vaqueros. Five different UTRGV players capped the game with a run batted in.
Game 4 – No. 5 Tarleton State 5, No. 4 California Baptist 3
No. 5 Tarleton State climbed further into the winner’s bracket with a comeback victory against No. 4 California Baptist, rallying in the top of the eighth inning with three runs to stun CBU. The Texans utilized a pair of infield singles to plate the go ahead and insurance runs in that frame for the win.
Cris Enriquez enjoyed a 3-for-4 day at the dish for Tarleton State, driving a run in and scoring an additional time.
Cole Miears ripped two base hits with one RBI and a run scored to power the Texan offense.
Jack Driskell tossed the final three innings of shutout relief and allowed two hits with a strikeout to earn the win for Tarleton State.
Julian Alvarez and
Josh Paino each had two hits and a run for CBU, while
Nick Dumesnil drove in two runs on a sixth-inning home run to left field.
Lukas Pirko went a solid 5.2 innings on the mound in his WAC tournament debut, scattering six hits and two earned runs with five strikeouts in a no decision.
