– The top tournament seed dropped both of its games, and numbers two and five kept their undefeated streaks alive to reach the semifinal round following play Thursday at the 2024 University Credit Union WAC Baseball Tournament at Hohokam Stadium. No. 2 Abilene Christian advanced in the winner’s bracket with a 16-7 win over No. 3 Utah Valley to open the day, and No. 5 Tarleton State punched its semifinal ticket with a 4-2 triumph against No. 1 Grand Canyon. No. 4 California Baptist stayed alive by eliminating UVU 9-3 in a knockout game, and No. 7 UTRGV won a wild 10-9 decision against GCU to send the Lopes out in consecutive games.
 
The 2024 University Credit Union WAC Baseball Tournament resumes with three games, including two knockout contests, on Friday. No. 2 ACU and No. 5 Tarleton State compete for a championship game berth at noon MST, with the non-advancing team facing the remaining one-loss team at 6 p.m. MST in a knockout matchup. No. 4 CBU and No. 7 UTRGV will clash at 3 p.m. MST looking to advance to Friday’s final game. All games will air on ESPN+.
 
Game 5 – No. 2 Abilene Christian 16, No. 3 Utah Valley 7
No. 2 Abilene Christian announced its arrival to the tournament field with 16 runs on 20 hits, which included seven that went for extra bases. The Wildcats took the lead for good in the bottom of the third inning with four runs and added five more in both the sixth and seventh frames.
 
Ben Greer finished the day 4-for-6 with an RBI, two stolen bases and three runs scored for ACU. Gino D’Alessio drove in three and scored three for the Wildcats, while five different ACU hitters each registered two RBIs apiece. Caden Greanead and Chandler Freeman combined for 3.2 innings of scoreless relief and eight strikeouts to close the game.
 
Daniel Dickinson shined for UVU with two hits, including a home run, three RBIs and two runs in the setback. Matthew Schwarz scored a pair of runs in the contest for the Wolverines.
 
Game 6 – No. 5 Tarleton State 4, No. 1 Grand Canyon 2
No. 5 Tarleton State stormed through top-seeded Grand Canyon with another signature tournament performance to reach the semifinals. The Texans scored a run in each frame from the fourth through the seventh while stranding 13 GCU runners aboard in the triumph.
 
Hunter Smith keyed the Tarleton State win with a 3-for-4 outing that included an RBI and two runs scored. Cole Miears and Jordan Andrade each had two hits in the afternoon showdown. Grant Garza spun 1.1 innings of shutout relief to snag his 10th win of the year.
 
Cade Verdusco and Elijah Buries each had two hits for GCU, with Verdusco and Beau Ankeney scoring runs for the Lopes in defeat.
 
Game 7 – No. 4 California Baptist 9, No. 3 Utah Valley 3
No. 4 California Baptist remained alive until Friday by dispatching No. 3 Utah Valley, scoring six runs over the final three innings to put the game away. The Lancers only trailed for a half inning in the contest after falling behind 1-0 in the bottom of the first.
 
Garret Ostrander posted two hits and drove in three runs in the CBU win, as Mitchel Simon and Connor Mcguire each added two RBIs. Seth Mattox earned the first save of the tournament after allowing one run over the final three innings, striking out three batters.
 
Daniel Dickinson, Nate Bach and Garrett Broussard each ended the season with two hits apiece for UVU. Dickinson added a stolen base and a run scored to his stat line.
 
Game 8 – No. 7 UTRGV 10, No. 1 Grand Canyon 9
No. 7 UTRGV swept No. 1 seed Grand Canyon out of the tournament thanks to a five-run rally after the fifth inning. The Vaqueros scored four in the fifth, one in the seventh and one in the eighth to complete the comeback.
 
Martin Vasquez finished the game 3-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs scored, smashing the game-winning solo home run deep to left field in the bottom of the eighth inning. Adrian Torres went a perfect 5-for-5 with a run batted in and two scored against his former team. Nico Rodriguez threw a season-high four innings of shutout relief, allowing three hits and striking out three on 67 pitches.
 
Tyler Wilson ripped two hits and drove in four runs on the night for GCU, while Eli Paton and Emilio Barreras each added three hits and two RBIs.
