WAC 2024 WSOC Release Week 2
UTAH VALLEY’S HOT START GAINS NATIONAL ATTENTION
The Wolverines started their season off with a bang and won a hard-fought match against Michigan 2-1 that went to the final seconds of the game. They followed that match with a dominant 5-2 victory over Detroit Mercy, putting themselves atop the WAC standings to start the year. Their performance has caught national attention as the team received 11 votes in this week’s United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll. This is the fifth time in program history the Wolverines have received votes, and the fourth time in the past two seasons. Utah Valley was also ranked second in the United Soccer Coaches Pacific Region.
WEBBER’S HOME-SWEET-HOME REUNION
Faith Webber returned to her home state of Michigan for Utah Valley’s season-opening road trip and did not disappoint in front of the home crowd. Webber scored both goals in the win against Michigan including the thrilling game-winner in the 89th minute of the match. Webber scored another goal and added an assist in their win against Detroit Mercy. Webber’s stellar trip home awarded her the WAC Offensive Player of the Week.
STRONG BATTLES ACROSS THE LEAGUE ON OPENING WEEK
The opening week of the 2024 WAC women’s soccer season saw some strong competition against some notable opponents. Seattle U traveled to Oregon and allowed just one goal to the Ducks. Grand Canyon hosted in-state rival Arizona and allowed just a single goal as well to the Wildcats, who scored five goals in their following match. California Baptist hosted #23 USC for their first game against a ranked opponent in their D1 era and allowed just one goal to the Trojans.
KEY MATCHUPS FOR WEEK TWO
The WAC will see a trio of Big 12 opponents this upcoming week with Utah Valley at UCF, Grand Canyon at Utah, and Tarleton State hosting Houston. Seattle U will continue the in-state rivalry matchups when they travel to Washington and the Wolverines will look to stay hot as they travel to Virginia following their UCF match.
