2024 WAC Men's Soccer Release - Week Six

UTAH VALLEY REMAINS ATOP THE WAC STANDINGS

Despite suffering its first defeat of the 2024 season, Utah Valley remained atop the WAC nonconference standings with a 5-1-2 (.750) record as of Sept. 24. San Diego State slid up to the second position with a .500 winning percentage (3-3-2), and Grand Canyon was third at 3-4-2 (.444).

SDSU’S MATEI CLAIMS WAC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
San Diego State forward Robbie Matei claimed WAC Offensive Player of the Week accolades after contributing to two of the three Aztec goals in a 3-3 draw against UC Davis on Sept. 21. Matei logged an assist on an Austin Brummett goal just 16 seconds into the match before connecting on his third goal of the season at 54:46 to put San Diego State back in front 3-2.

CBU’S DO REGO CONTINUES RUN OF FORM IN GOAL
California Baptist goalkeeper Hugo Do Rego secured a third WAC Goalkeeper of the Week award in 2024 after a standout showing for the Lancers in a 1-0 setback against Loyola Marymount on Sept. 20. Do Rego was credited with 12 saves in the match, including nine in the second half, to keep CBU within striking distance of LMU. Do Rego had the best save percentage (.818) and the second most saves (45) in the conference as of Sept. 24.

FIRST OFFICIAL NCAA RPI OF THE SEASON HAS BEEN RELEASED
The first 2024 edition of the NCAA RPI rankings, the main metric that helps select and seed the NCAA Championship, was released earlier this week. As of the latest NCAA RPI update on Sept. 23, Utah Valley was the top team from the WAC with an adjusted RPI ranking of 47. UNLV was next ranked 56th, and Grand Canyon was the third WAC squad at number 64. Other WAC teams included in the top 100 were San Diego State (75), California Baptist (79) and Seattle U (93).

FINAL WEEK OF NONCONFERENCE PLAY IS ON TAP
The final week of nonconference matches awaits WAC men’s soccer teams. Utah Valley is scheduled to welcome Oregon State in a key matchup on Sept. 25 and UTRGV travels to No. 16 SMU on Sept. 29 to highlight the nonconference slate.
