WINNING WAYS IN THE WAC
For the first time this season, all seven teams in the WAC hold a winning percentage of .500 or better. The league’s overall record currently stands at 38-23 (.623) after five weeks of non-conference play. The WAC checks in at No. 10 in the conference NET rankings, ranked ahead of the West Coast, Mountain West, Mid-American and Conference USA. The league has shown its home dominance this season as the WAC holds a combined home record of 26-7 (.788).
UNDEFEATED WEEK IN THE LONE STAR STATE
Last week, the Texas teams of Abilene Christian, Tarleton State and UT Arlington posted a combined 5-0 record as the Wildcats and Texans collected two wins each with the Lady Mavs winning their lone match of the week over Little Rock 62-55. The Wildcats defeated McMurry 112-60 and East Texas A&M 72-55 while the Texans took down Mississippi Valley State 66-50 and Texas A&M - San Antonio 94-73. Tarleton State and UT Arlington extended its winning streaks to three games and Abilene Christian began a new winning streak with its two victories last week.
CHAMBERS LEADS SECOND HALF COMEBACK FOR SOUTHERN UTAH AGAINST NEW MEXICO STATE
Southern Utah stands alone atop of the WAC standings for the first time this season at 7-2 following a 69-59 victory at home last week against New Mexico State where the Thunderbirds erased a 12-point deficit in the third quarter. The T-Birds were led by
Sierra Chambers who dropped a career-high 28 points in the game, 16 coming in the third quarter alone. For the third time this season, Chambers made 10-of-10 attempts from the charity line, pushing to a streak of 31-straight made free throws.
WOLVERINES’ STELLAR DEFENSE
Utah Valley holds the best scoring defense in the WAC, allowing only 56.4 points per game. The UVU defense is highlighted by the Wolverines’ ability to steal the ball and force turnovers as the team is ranked third nationally in steals per game (16.5) and fourth in turnovers forced per game (27.50). Four different Wolverines rank inside the WAC’s top six players with the most steals per game, led by
Cambree Blackham who averages 3.25 steals, the 24th most in the nation individually.
