KIRK AND BATTERTON HIGHLIGHT GCU’S KICKOFF CLASSIC
Grand Canyon began its season picking up five wins in six games thanks to a big offensive weekend from the WAC Preseason Player of the Year,
Savannah Kirk who collected a nation-leading 13 hits in 20 at-bats with four RBIs and four runs.
Taryn Batterton dominated the pitching circle for the Lopes and threw a five-inning no-hitter against Colgate on Friday night. Batterton allowed no runs, allowed only three hits, and struck out 12 in 11.2 innings on the weekend.
TARLETON STATE’S GRAND START TO THE SEASON
The Texans got the season started in grand fashion thanks to a first inning grand slam from
Bella Hernandez, her first career home run in her 100th career game.
Austin Germain is off to a hot start for TSU as she went 8-for-12 (.667) with three doubles, the 11th best batting average in the nation.
CBU’S PRESEASON ALL-WAC HONOREES SHOW OUT IN WEEK 1
Kate Penberthy leads the WAC in RBIs with nine in week one, which included a six RBI game against Southern University where Penberthy went 3-for-3 with a grand slam.
Kalena Burns hit two home runs versus Lehigh for her first career multi-homer game and CBU’s third multi-homer game in the D1 era and the first since 2019.
DOUBLE (NO) TROUBLE FOR SOUTHERN UTAH
Southern Utah opens the season third in the country in doubles per game with 2.60. Ten of the Thunderbirds’ 13 doubles came in the final two games of the weekend.
Amyah Boostedt leads the team with three doubles and is one of only five players in the conference to reach this mark as of now.
STELLAR SHUTOUTS IN THE PITCHING CIRCLE
The WAC saw some big-time performances in the pitching circle in week one outside of Batterton’s no-hitter.
Emilie Hoelscher threw a complete-game shutout against Prairie View A&M to begin the year for UTA. UTU’s
Sauren Garton also threw an opening day complete-game two-hit shutout versus UC Riverside. Batterton’s teammate
Maggie Place closed the weekend for GCU with a complete-game shutout of her own against Montana.
UTAH VALLEY’S FLASHY LEATHER
The Wolverines brought the gold glove defense to begin the season as Utah Valley committed just one single error in five games for a team fielding percentage of 0.993, the fourth best percentage in the country. Six Wolverines hold a perfect fielding percentage with at least ten fielding chances.
