2025 WAC Baseball Release - Week 3

GCU HOLDS COURT OVER BIG TEN FOES IN WEEK TWO

Following a challenging opening weekend taking part in the MLB Desert Invitational, Grand Canyon enjoyed a 4-1 homestand against No. 23 Nebraska and Rutgers in Phoenix. The Lopes downed Nebraska 3-1 on Feb. 17 before rattling off three wins against Rutgers on Feb. 21-22. GCU infielder Emilio Barreras earned WAC Player of the Week accolades after batting .632 with a home run, five RBIs and six runs scored last week to pace the Lopes.

QUALITY START FOR SAC STATE’S GIBBONS EARNS WEEKLY PITCHING HONOR
Sacramento State right-hander Evan Gibbons bounced back in his second start of 2025 with a gem on the mound for the Hornets in a 2-0 shutout win against Ball State on Feb. 21. Gibbons spun six innings of two-hit baseball, yielding two walks while striking out eight batters on 100 pitches to log his first victory of the season. Gibbons captured WAC Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 24 in recognition of the sensational start.

CBU’S DUMESNIL HEATS UP
Preseason WAC Player of the Year Nick Dumesnil from California Baptist got the bat cooking over the course of five Lancer games last week, batting .450 with five extra-base hits (two home runs), eight RBIs and five runs scored while slugging .900. Dumesnil kickstarted the week a triple shy of the cycle, finishing with three hits and five RBIs against Portland on Feb. 17. Dumesnil added a 3-for-5 day with three RBIs and two runs the following day against Pepperdine.

UTAH TECH’S MCDANIEL CONTINUES TO IMPRESS
Entering the third weekend of play in the 2025 season, Utah Tech infielder Kyle McDaniel has continued his offensive pace to lead the Trailblazer lineup. McDaniel was the WAC leader in hits (15) entering games on Feb. 27, logging the third most total bases (23) and fourth best batting average in the league (.417).

A SIZZLING START FOR SAC STATE’S BROWN
Preseason all-conference relief pitcher Kade Brown from Sacramento State has performed as advertised during his first three appearances of 2025. Brown has surrendered just three hits in 8.1 innings of work, allowing one run (a solo home run) while striking out 12 and limiting opposing hitters to a .111 average against.
