Utah Valley Leads After First Day Of The 2025 WAC Indoor Track and Field Championships

SPOKANE, Wash.
– Utah Valley was the top team on both sides of the draw on Friday following the opening day of the 2025 WAC Indoor Track and Field Championships at The Podium. The Wolverines scored 75 points in six scored women’s events and 61 points in five scored men’s events to claim the overnight lead.

Grand Canyon was second in the women’s standings with 46 points, followed by Tarleton State with 42 points. UT Arlington was in the second spot in the men’s standings with 43 points and Tarleton State was third with 38 points.

Tarleton State dominated the men’s long jump final, taking the top four spots on the podium to run away with the event. Sir Jonathan Sims earned the first Texan WAC long jump title with a round four attempt of 7.71m (25-3.50). Teammates Lokesh Sathyanathan (7.68m/25-2.50), Reid Vincent (7.39m/24-3.00) and Gabriel Tosti (7.28m/23-10.75) added strong performances.

Tarleton State capped a sweep in the long jump in the women’s final, with Prestina Ochonogor besting the meet, facility and conference record with a third round jump of 6.64m (21-9.50). Ochonogor’s effort was the sixth-ranked mark in NCAA Division I this season. Teammate Sofia DeGroot was second with a top attempt of 5.90m (19-4.25) and Utah Valley’s Kelsi Oldroyd was third with a 5.85m (19-2.50) effort.

Anna Martin became the fifth straight champion from Utah Valley in the women’s 5000-meter run, clocking a personal best time of 16:41.20 to capture the conference crown. Teammate Caila Odekirk was second in 16:50.23, with Matro Jepkemboi of UT Arlington third with a time of 17:01.15.

Utah Valley’s Mo Guled was on pace for the meet record in the men’s 5000-meter run, ultimately clocking the second fastest final heat in the history of the WAC Indoor Championships with a time of 14:03.39 to capture the event win. Teammates Wyatt Mortensen (14:31.79) and Alex Hartshorn (14:32.58) completed the podium sweep for the Wolverines.

Defending women’s mile champion Winnie Kipsang from UT Arlington opened her title defense with the top preliminary time in heat two, running a qualifying time of 4:55.00 to pace the field in the event. Other automatic qualifiers included Utah Valley’s Oakley Olson (4:56.04), Tarleton State’s Morgan Lamberson (5:00.28) and Utah Valley’s Allie Warner (5:00.36).

Utah Valley’s Quincy Bonds nearly equaled the meet record in the opening prelim heat of the women’s 60-meter hurdles, clocking in at 8.21 to miss tying the fastest championship time by .01. Additional automatic bids were claimed by Grand Canyon’s Amanda Thrue (8.42), UT Arlington’s Zaire Moore (8.51) and Southern Utah’s Savannah Nielson (8.57).

Santiago Gaitan from Southern Utah, the 2023 WAC champion in the men’s mile, secured the top spot in the preliminary heats by crossing the finish line with a time of 4:12.31. Alex Kalmar from UT Arlington (4:13.05) and the Utah Valley pair of Adam Bunker (4:13.21) and Abdulsalam Farah (4:13.61) contributed automatic qualifying times.

Defending men’s 60-meter hurdles champion Daviciea McCartney from Grand Canyon was the second of three auto qualifiers from Grand Canyon (7.83), joining teammates Prosper Ekporere (7.79) and Cameron Wilmington (7.86). Tarleton State’s Omar Mahmoud (7.96) added the fourth automatic time in the prelim heats.

Two-time WAC 60-meter dash champion Justin Raines from Grand Canyon started his march for a third win in the event emphatically with a PR time of 6.58 in the prelim heats to set the pace. Kade Thompson (6.67) and defending champion Gabe Remy (6.70) from Utah Valley and GCU’s Joseph Harding (6.71) added automatic qualifying times.
