2025 WAC Basketball Tournament Central
LAS VEGAS – The top two seeds of the 2025 WAC Women’s Basketball Tournament took care of business in the first day of the quarterfinal round as No. 1 Grand Canyon defeated No. 8 Utah Tech and No. 2 Tarleton State took down No. 7 Southern Utah. The Lopes and the Texans will move on to the semifinals on Friday, March 14 at the Orleans Arena.
No. 1 Grand Canyon will take on the winner of No. 4 Abilene Christian and No. 5 Utah Valley at 12 p.m. PT and No. 2 Tarleton State will play the winner of No. 3 UT Arlington and No. 6 California Baptist at 2:30 p.m. PT.
No. 1 Grand Canyon 71, No. 8 Utah Tech 47 | Box Score
No. 1 Grand Canyon showed a strong defensive presence against No. 8 Utah Tech as the Lopes knocked out the Trailblazers 71-47. This win marks the 30th victory for GCU this season, the most in program history, as well as the team’s 28th consecutive win.
Senior guard Alyssa Durazo-Frescas made WAC history this afternoon as she notched her 115th 3-pointer this season, surpassing Becky Hammon’s record of 114 set back in 1998-99. The record was broken at the end of the second quarter as Durazo-Frescas nailed a buzzer beater heading into halftime. Senior guard Trinity San Antonio backed up her WAC Player of the Year award with a powerful offensive performance of 25 points, five rebounds and three assists. Graduate forward Laura Erikstrup was two rebounds short of a double-double as she recorded 14 points and eight boards while making all five of her attempts from the field and all four of her free throw attempts.
Freshman guard Ellie Taylor led the scoring for Utah Tech, posting 11 points along with two steals. Senior forward Emily Isaacson ended her legendary Trailblazer career with nine points, three rebounds and two steals. Junior guard Chardonnay Hartley registered eight points and accounted for 11 of UTU’s 14 total assists. The Trailblazers conclude the 2024-25 season 6-25.
No. 2 Tarleton State 59, No. 7 Southern Utah 40 | Box Score
No. 2 Tarleton State defeated No. 7 Southern Utah 59-40 to pick up the program’s second ever WAC Tournament win and complete the season sweep against the Thunderbirds.
The Texans’ defense held Southern Utah to just 40 points, the lowest score posted in a WAC Tournament game since 2008. Senior guard Miannah Little and sophomore center Faith Acker both notched 16 points apiece in the second quarterfinal game of the afternoon as Acker was two boards shy of a double-double. Senior forward Elise Turrubiates just reached double digit scoring figures with 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
Graduate guards Daylani Ballena, Sydney Gandy and Samantha Johnston all played their final collegiate game of their careers this afternoon as they recorded nine, nine and eight points, respectively. Southern Utah finished its season 9-21.
