ARLINGTON, Texas – Tarleton State’s
Kalyn Hill and Seattle U’s
Berkley Vance have been named the Jersey Mike’s A Sub Above Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, for the game week ending on Saturday, Mar. 22.
Hill, a senior catcher, collected nine hits in 12 at-bats for a batting average of .750 on the week, tied for the fifth-best average in the country last week for players with a minimum of 10 at-bats. Hill also tied for the third-most runs batted in last week with 11 in four games. Five of her nine hits were for extra bases as she hit three home runs and two doubles, leading to a slugging percentage of 1.667. Hill went 3-for-3 with seven RBI and three runs scored including a grand slam against Prairie View A&M. Hill was also perfect behind the plate for three games, credited with a 1.000 percent fielding percentage.
Vance, a right-handed sophomore pitcher, pitched a career-high eight innings and struck out a career-high 13 batters in Seattle U’s 7-5 win over Creighton. After the Redhawks gave up five runs in the first inning, Vance was called from the bullpen and held the Bluejays from scoring the rest of the game and allowed only four hits and one walk in 30 batters faced. Vance’s 13 strikeouts are the most in a game in the WAC this season as Vance was the first Redhawk to accomplish the feat for Seattle U since 2020.
