2025 WAC SB Week 5 Release
CONFERENCE PLAY KICKS OFF FRIDAY
This Friday will mark the beginning of 2025 WAC-play as Tarleton State will travel to Southern Utah, Abilene Christian to Seattle U, Utah Valley to California Baptist, and Utah Tech to UT Arlington. Grand Canyon will start its conference play next Friday when the Lopes head to Orem, Utah to take on the Wolverines next week.
WAC RPI RANKINGS
The NCAA released this year’s first edition of the softball RPI rankings and the WAC saw three teams inside the top 100 and six squads total in the top 150. Grand Canyon leads the league as the Lopes are ranked 27th, the highest of all non-power conference teams. Seattle U checked in at 78th while California Baptist ranked 98th. UT Arlington, Utah Valley, and Southern Utah were all inside the top 150 as well.
CALIFORNIA BAPTIST WINS BAYLOR TOURNAMENT
California Baptist traveled to Waco, Texas last weekend to compete in the Baylor Invitational and the Lancers came away victorious after beating the Bears 2-1 in the championship game thanks to a walk-off RBI double from
Kate Penberthy. CBU went 4-1 in the invitational and took wins from Sam Houston (x2) and North Texas with a split series against Baylor.
Annika Hollingsworth, Matti Severns, Kalena Burns and Penberthy were named to the All-Tournament Team.
HAYS GETS 150TH GCU VICTORY IN 4-0 WEEKEND
Grand Canyon had another undefeated weekend on the home turf, collecting wins over Utah State, Yale, Oregon State and UTEP. The victory against Yale marked win No. 150 for
Shannon Hays as the Lopes’ head coach.
Jada Cooper was named this week’s WAC Player of the Week after batting .600 on the weekend with three home runs and two doubles while driving in six RBIs. GCU’s RPI ranking of 27th is the highest RPI in its program history.
SEATTLE U’S AVARI MORRIS NO-HITS YALE
Avari Morris was tabbed this week’s WAC Pitcher of the Week after throwing Seattle U’s sixth ever no-hitter, and the first since 2020, in the Redhawk’s 9-0 victory against Yale. Morris went all five innings in the game without allowing a hit, walk, or run while striking out four to improve her season record to 3-3. Seattle U went 3-2 in the GCU/ASU Invitational, defeating UTEP, Yale and Utah State while falling to Arizona State and Oregon by just one run each.
