2025 WAC Baseball Release - Week 9

GCU EXTENDS CONFERENCE WIN STREAK TO SEVEN STRAIGHT

Grand Canyon improved to 8-1 in WAC play with seven straight league wins following a conference sweep at California Baptist last weekend. GCU outfielder Michael Diaz captured WAC Player of the Week and NCBWA National Player of the Week honors after batting .571 with four home runs, 16 RBIs and seven runs in four games for the Lopes on the week. Diaz clubbed two home runs and drove in five runs in game two of the series and added three hits and seven RBIs in the series finale at CBU.

UVU WITH FOUR STRAIGHT WAC WINS AFTER SWEEP AT UTAH TECH
Utah Valley improved to 7-2 in conference action after taking all three games on the road at rival Utah Tech last weekend. The Wolverines upped their active winning surge in league play to four consecutive victories. Jacob Heppner captured WAC Pitcher of the Week after a stellar performance in the 15-0 series finale win over Utah Tech on April 6. Heppner faced the minimum in the seven-inning shutout win, scattering two hits with no free bases while striking out four Utah Tech batters.

A SWEEP FOR SACRAMENTO STATE
Sacramento State settled into the third slot in the conference standings following a three-game sweep at Abilene Christian, downing the Wildcats 9-3, 13-4 and 14-4 last weekend. The Hornets batted .322 as a team with 18 extra-base hits and 31 RBIs against the Wildcats. Sacramento State ace Evan Gibbons scattered six hits in eight shutout innings with three strikeouts in the opening game at ACU on April 4.

TYSON THE TRIPLES MACHINE
Tarleton State outfielder Tyson Drake only had one hit during a midweek win at UIW on April 9 but it was an impactful base knock, as Drake logged his NCAA Division I leading seventh triple of 2025. Two WAC players are in the current NCAA top five for triples this season, as Abilene Christian’s Ben Greer registered five triples as of April 9 to rank fifth.

THE WAC IN THE NCAA RPI
One team from the WAC was included in the top 50 of the latest NCAA RPI rankings report on April 8. Grand Canyon paced the conference in the 49th position in the most recent rankings report. The eight wins for the Lopes against opponents in the current Top 100 led all WAC squads.
