GRAND CANYON TOPS MID-MAJOR RANKINGS WITH 11TH STRAIGHT WIN
Grand Canyon solidified its spot at the top of the WAC standings following a sweep against Seattle U last weekend in a series battle for first place in the conference. GCU then defeated Arizona State 4-0 Tuesday night for its 11th consecutive victory, one shy of the program record. The Lopes jumped back to the top of D1 Softball’s Mid Major Rankings and broke inside D1 Softball’s Top 25 at No. 25 for the first time this season. GCU also ranked at No. 35 in the NCAA softball RPI and received 19 votes in the latest ESPN.com/USA Softball poll.
TARLETON STATE CONTINUES TO ROLL IN WAC PLAY
Tarleton State picked up its eighth straight WAC victory with a sweep at home versus Utah Valley last weekend. The Texans were riding on a 10-game winning streak, tied for the longest winning streak in their D1 era, before suffering a 2-0 loss in the second game of a double-header with Lamar. However, the Texans continued to climb the D1 Softball Mid Major Rankings, checking in at No. 20.
SOUTHERN UTAH WINS HIGH-SCORING SERIES VERSUS UTAH TECH
The Thunderbirds and the Trailblazers gave each other’s pitching staff a rough weekend as the two teams combined for 60 runs and 74 hits in their three-game series. Utah Tech took the first game of the series 12-6 as senior
Carly Eldredge went 3-for-3 with four RBIs. Southern Utah evened the series with a 9-8 game two win as this week’s WAC Player of the Week,
Arianna Ramirez, went 4-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs. SUU overcame an 11-4 deficit in game three to earn the 14-11 comeback win as six Thunderbirds collected two hits in part of their explosive offense.
MCCONNELL AND THE LANCERS SILENCE THE UTA BATS
California Baptist bounced back to fifth place in the WAC standings following a home series victory over UT Arlington and is one game back of third place in the conference standings. Senior
Morgan McConnell led CBU to the series win after pitching back-to-back complete games and limiting UTA to just three runs and six hits in the 13 innings pitched. McConnell’s performance in the series awarded her this week’s WAC Pitcher of the Week honor.
