Grand Canyon, NM State Share 36-Hole Lead At The 2023 WAC Men’s Golf Championship

BOULDER CITY, Nev. – Grand Canyon joined the fray and climbed a pair of slots on the leaderboard to share the 36-hole lead with NM State after round two of the 2023 Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Men’s Golf Championship on Saturday at the Boulder Creek Golf Club. The Lopes carded a 15-under round of 273 on day two (280-273) to tie the Aggies (277-276) at 23-under-par 553 on the 7,482-yard, par-72 layout.
The field averaged a score of 71.48 over 65 completed rounds in the second round, bringing the tournament average to an impressive 72.26 for the weekend. Five holes at Boulder Creek remained under par, with the 579-yard par-5 13th hole the easiest on the course. No. 13 has yielded 13 eagles, 68 birdies and just six bogeys for a cumulative -0.68 scoring average for the championship.
First-round leader Sam Houston drifted back to third place at 17-under-par 559 (274-285), while Seattle U remained in fourth place after posting a 36-hole total of 561 (283-278, -15). Utah Valley jumped three places on the leaderboard by matching GCU with a second-round 273 to check in fifth with a team total of 563 (290-273, -13).
NM State’s Garrett Smith continued his stellar play with a second straight outstanding round, notching eight birdies as part of a 7-under 65 to take a five-stroke lead in the individual standings at 129 (64-65, -15). Smith equaled the tournament 36-hole scoring record set by Tulsa’s David Inglis (66-69) at Turtle Bay Resort in 2002. Sam Houston’s Bret Gray remained in close pursuit at 10-under-par 134 (66-68), with Utah Tech’s Davis Heslington in solo third place at 9-under 135 (66-69). Five players in the field carded multiple rounds in the 60s through 36 holes, while 21 total golfers have played each of the first two rounds at even par or better.
