UT ARLINGTON ONLY WAC TEAM TO REMAIN UNBEATEN AFTER WEEK ONE
UT Arlington was the only WAC team to sweep the opening weekend. In UTA’s season opener, the Mavs won 3-1 against Bryant on Aug. 25. On Aug. 26, the Mavs won against Rhode Island in straight sets and then went on to beat Air Force in a 3-2 thriller.
UTAH VALLEY TAKES DOWN UTAH
Utah Valley snapped an 11-match losing streak to Utah on Aug. 25. The last UVU victory in the series was in 2009. The Wolverines had a dominant 3-1 win, holding Utah to a .138 team hitting percentage.
MITCHELL SECURES FIRST DOUBLE-DOUBLE OF '23 SEASON
Grand Canyon’s Klaire Mitchell notched the first double-double of the season having 39 assists and 11 digs in a win over Toledo on Aug. 26. Mitchell earned WAC Setter of the Week after recording 104 assists, 27 digs and five blocks.
TALK ABOUT A FRESHMAN DEBUT
Utah Valley freshman Lani Matavao showed no fear during her collegiate debut weekend as she earned WAC Libero of the Week. In the Wolverines season opener against North Carolina State, Matavao had 18 digs. Matavao went on to have 20 digs in the win over Utah and a season-high 25 digs during the Wolverines second match against NC State.
STRONG HITTING PERCENTAGE SHOWINGS
Four student-athletes hit above a .400 hitting percentage with 20 or more kills. Seattle U’s Yasemin Elmas leads the WAC with a .611 hitting clip on 23 kills and currently ranks fourth in the nation. UTRGV’s Luisa Silva Dos Santos has a .472 with 21 kills. WAC Player of the Week Paige Reagor from UT Arlington has a .459 with 33 kills, while Abilene Christian’s Braden Bossier has a .442 with 23 kills.
KEY MATCHUPS FOR WEEK TWO
Big weekend for Grand Canyon as it prepares to take on not one but two power five schools at home. The Lopes will face Iowa State on Sept. 2 and Arizona on Sept. 3. Southern Utah will face California and Utah Valley takes on Maryland, both matches will be on Sept. 9.
