Jersey Mike’s A Sub Above WAC Volleyball Athletes of the Week Announced

ARLINGTON, Texas – Utah Valley’s Avery Shewell, Evalyn Chism, and Lani Matavao have been named the Jersey Mike’s A Sub Above Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Volleyball Player, Setter, and Libero of the week, for the match week ending on Monday, Sept. 9.
 
Shewell, a junior outside hitter, finished the Ellesyn Invitational hosted by Montana with 45 kills and averaged 4.09 kills per set while hitting .267. Shewell also totaled 24 digs, nine blocks, and four aces while averaging 4.95 points per set. She earned her first double-double of the year against Southern Miss by collecting 16 kills and 11 digs. In the Wolverines’ win against Boise State, Shewell recorded 13 kills for a .375 hitting percentage, with seven digs, four blocks, two aces, and two assists.
 
Chism, a sophomore setter, collects her second straight weekly honor after notching another triple-digit performance in assists on the weekend, collecting 112 assists (10.18/set) along with 22 digs, five kills, four blocks, and an ace. Chism set a new career-high 51 assists against Southern Miss and became the first UVU player to have 50 assists in a match since 2007 while adding 14 digs to record her second double-double of the season. Chism leads the WAC and is 16th in the country in assists per set with 10.81.
 
Matavao, a sophomore libero, is also awarded her second straight weekly honor and completes the UVU sweep after recording 44 digs for 4.0 digs per set and four aces from behind the service line. Matavao now has double-digit digs in four out of six matches including a season-high of 19 against Southern Miss.
